New! 
2018 LEGO Robotics Spring Workshop

Are you interested in participating in Lego Robotics next year? Any students who want to join the VOCS FLL teams (Tehachapi Turbines, etc.) next fall will be required to first take our new 2018 LEGO Robotics Spring Workshop. Students in grades 4 through 8 who want to participate in the First LEGO League (FLL) in Fall, 2018 will be given first priority.  However, the workshop is also open to students who want to learn about robotics and computer programming but do not intend to participate in FLL, if space is available. This workshop is suitable for beginners new to robotics and LEGO Mindstorms as well as returning robotics students. Adults who want to coach or mentor an FLL team are welcome to participate in the workshop as students. Space is limited.

When: Tuesday nights from 6 to 8 pm – April 3 through May 8 (six meetings)

New! Writing Instruction for Parents! 

Would you like some guidance on helping your 3rd-5th grade student transition from writing a single paragraph to a 3-5 paragraph essay? Beginning Wednesday, February 21st, Mrs. Rosander and Mrs. Hayes will be showing parents tips and strategies to move young writers from a well-written paragraph to a well-written essay. 

When: Wednesday, February 21st – Wednesday, March 21st. (5 weeks)
Time: 11:15-12:00pm
Where: Classroom E

Topics: Writing Process & the Well-Written Paragraph, Types of Essays & Organization, Opening Paragraph Starters, Transitions & Descriptive Words, Effective Closing Paragraphs.

Spring Friday Class Dates: 2/16, 2/23, 3/2, 3/9

Order Pizza for Spring Friday Lunches!

If students and/or parents would like to have pizza for lunch during Spring Friday Classes, you may print the order form or pick one up in the front office. The order is for ALL 4 weeks. Order form must be turned in no later than 10:00 am, Friday, February 16th, the first day of Spring Friday Classes.

Snack Basket- Jr. ASB is selling school snacks and water during Friday Classes

Jr. ASB members will visit each 2nd-8th grade class during lunch on Fridays with a baskets of yummy snacks to sell. Snacks are always available in the office for purchase. Please see attached price list. Proceeds benefit 6-8th Grade Socials and Community Services.

2nd – 8th Grade Students bring to classes
  • A copy of the student’s schedule emailed after online sign-up.
  • Pencil, paper, and thin three holed binder (or folder with pockets)
  • “Water and snack!!!!!! Bring a lunch if your student is staying all day or purchase pizza for them. The description and form is available below on the Newsflash.
General Information 
  • Friday Classes for 2nd-8th – 1st period starts at 9:00 sharp and 5th period ends promptly at 2:25.
  • Friday Classes for TK-1, period 1 starts at 8:50 sharp and 4th period ends promptly at 2:40.
  • For safety reasons, be sure to drop-off and pick-up your students on time.
  • Please call the front office to report an absence and contact the teaching resource teacher. Students are expected to attend all Fall Friday Classes.
Drop off and Pick Up Information 
During Friday Classes, both parking lots can get crazy.  Please see below for drop-off and pick-up procedures.  Friendly reminder – please do not park in front of our neighbor on the corner.  If you have any questions, please contact your resource teacher.
Main Building Parking Lot
When possible, please drop off at the yellow curb and have your student walk to class.  If parking is needed, please park on the street and walk your student to class. For picking up students, please park on the street and walk to pick-up your student.  Students will not be allowed to walk through the backfield.  Parking spaces will be available in the lot until it becomes full.  Once the parking lot is full, we will close the parking lot. Please do not make a U-turn directly in front of the school driveway after picking up your student. For safety purposes, continue driving south on South Street and make the U-turn past the annex.
TK-1 Drop Off and Pick Up
Please enter in through the driveway just past Napa and exit through the driveway closest to the annex.  For the morning session, please drop off students between 8:40-8:50.  If your child is not eating lunch, please pick him/her up at 11:15.  If they are staying for lunch, please pick him/her up at 11:30.  For the afternoon session, please drop off kids at 12:00 for lunch.  Please pick up your child for the afternoon session at 2:40.

ACTORS NEEDED!!!!

The 7th-12th grade drama club is in desperate need of two actors to fill in for the current play!  Please check out the Drama Website for more info!


Please “Save the date” for the next Townhall/PEP meeting on Wednesday, February 28th at 1:30 pm.

Thank you to all of our parents that came out to vote on the new proposed VOPTAC bylaws. 

After collecting all votes from all five sites, 60% were in favor of the VOPTAC bylaws and 40% were not.  Since there was not a 2/3 vote in favor of the new proposed VOPTAC bylaws, the VOPTAC committee will be meeting to discuss the next steps.

Final turn in date for Box Tops is Monday, February 26th!  Please remember to come in with your box tops!

 Clip, bag up, and turn in your Box Tops by February 26th. In your ziplock baggie, be sure to include: student name, resource teacher name, and # of Box Tops. Bring them into the office to Ms. Darla by the deadline.

Winter Wednesday Classes 

Note: If there is a gap in your student’s schedule where they do not have an assigned class, your student must be picked up and cannot just wait at the school. Sign ups closed.

The Winter Wednesday Class Schedule has several open classrooms available for parents looking for warm place to wait while their students are in class.

Please notice on the schedule that any classroom labeled “Table Meetings” is available for you to work with your children or just come in and wait. We do ask that you do not leave your students in a classroom without a teacher or parent to supervise.


Save the date! Elegant Evening of the Arts is coming on Friday, April 27th!

This fun evening of music and art is our showcase event for our talented students. You won’t want to miss it! More information coming soon.

Auditions for Elegant Evening of the Arts will be held on Monday, March 5th, from 1-3:00 pm in Classroom BC.

We are looking for talented students in the areas of: vocal (solos, duets, etc), instrumental, dance, oral language and dramatic presentations. Please keep your performance to 5 minutes or less, lyrics and costumes should be school-appropriate. You  will be performing in front of a panel of friendly judges as well as an audience of your family and friends, so have your performance polished for the audition. To request an audition time, please email Mrs. Hayes at hayes@valleyoakstehachapi.org
